Everybody's Looking for Something...

In 1983 the British rock band Eurythmics released an album with the title track "Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)" which went to no. 1 on the Billboard Top 100 charts.

A lot of people, including me, thought it was a cool song.  I still think so. If you know the song, you'll no doubt recall the hook "everybody's looking for something." If by chance you don't know the song, pull it up and listen. Although I must warn you, it might stay stuck in your head for a while.

It's that line that got me thinking this morning. I could picture a world filled with people all milling about, rushing around, drifting, scheming, hiding something. People hoping, dreaming, everybody looking for something, bouncing off one unfulfilling result after another. People everywhere, looking for something.  Never satisfied for very long. Never quite fulfilled. Not quite happy. The song captured a human condition, a need, a perpetual seeking, a never-quite-finding.

That condition persists today. Always looking for more of this, less of that; something. But like a GPS device, a specific destination must be entered or you probably won't get there. And before you can enter a destination you must know where you want to arrive. Otherwise, you drift and wonder, and wander in your personal wilderness.

Personal leadership is all about identifying your true objective and empowering you to get there. One new client told me in our second week of working together that she had resolved a 10-year-old issue, and immediately felt a freedom and aliveness that, without her even fully realizing it, had been missing all those years, but was now fully present. She was thrilled.

What destination is programmed into your GPS? Is it clear where you want to go, or a little vague? Are you maybe waiting until something happens to get moving? Maybe a little stuck in not knowing, or feeling general uncertainty?
